Johnson's Backyard Garden
Contact: Brenton Johnson, 386-5273, farm@johnsonsbackyardgarden.com
Citizen Gardener volunteers participate in our Workshare program. Workshare members volunteer on Wednesdays or Saturdays from 8am to 12:30 or 1pm in exchange for a box of fresh produce. The Citizen Gardener participants would not have to commit to more than 10 hours of work overall, but we would ask that they volunteer for the whole 4.5 to 5 hour time period when they do come to the farm. Then, they could finish their hours in two visits and decide if they wanted to continue the Workshare program on their own afterwards.

We recommend you wear long sleeves and pants and sturdy shoes for protection. Also consider bringing a large brimmed hat, a jug of ice water and snacks. If you like you may want to also bring gloves.
Our farm is located a 9515 Hergotz Lane, Austin, TX 78742, 5 miles east of downtown Austin near the ABIA airport. Let us know if you need directions. Please e-mail us and let us know if you plan on coming.

Urban Roots is a super program of Youth Launch of Austin. They operate on a section of the Hands of the Earth Farm CSA and are gearing up for their Spring Semester group of young, High School students who will learn their vegetables, how to prep, plant, tend and harvest, and also how to work as a diverse group, take product to market, sales/retail/business, and what it feels like to give food they grew to needy families. Here is their request for volunteers for the Jan. season.

Yes, it’s getting colder (did you see that snow Tuesday night?!) but our seeds are ordered and we are planning our first few planting dates in January. Tentatively, were are scheduling volunteer days for Tuesday January 6th to spread compost, Saturday January 10th to plant, Saturday January 24th to plant, and Thursday January 29th to plant. All volunteer days start at 9:00 and finish at 12:30pm. We will post more dates online soon. If you are interested in volunteering on the farm for any of these dates, email Kelly Stolpman (kstolpman@youthlaunch.org).

Is Bluebonnet Elementary School the one in Round Rock? If so, who is the contact person?

Also, would it be possible to have a separate list for Williamson County volunteer opportunities? It would make it much easier for those of us who live "up North" to find a place closer to home to volunteer. And it's nice to be involved with our own community.
