Seeding the Garden of Gardeners

I am thinking of planting some, but using red potatoes that have started to have eyes on them (in my pantry). I thought instead of throwing them away that I could use them as plants, rather than buying them. However, when I read information on line, I keep hearing to buy special potatoes for my garden. Does anyone know why I should not use the potates I currently have or which ones I should buy for our climate/zone (Austin Texas)? Thanks.

Cynthia,
Johnsons Backyard is harvesting potatoes and looking for some volunteers. Bet they would love to talk about potatoes with you.... If you haven't done your hours this might be a great idea. SEE the volunteer section on the main page for more information!! Nita

I understand you'll have less disease if you buy the treated seed potatoes. They are usually available for the Mid Feb planting date at many area distributors. I get mine from the Pflugers at Green 'n Growing on main drag thru Pflugerville.
